We take a look at some of the songs making waves across the globe this week.
Anaïs – Nina
London based Anaïs channels the defiant spirit of Nina Simone on her debut release. The refrain “Nina told me that I’m free” paired with her angelic backing vocals is the most comforting thing you will hear all week. Anaïs’ soulful voice is like a long, warm hug. Definitely one to watch in 2018.
For fans of: Solange.
James Blake – If The Car Behind You Moves Ahead
Here is James Blake at his best. This track manages to elegantly incorporate the vocal manipulation found in Blake’s earlier EP’s and make it sound as fresh as it did in 2009. It seems that James Blake has mastered the art of pairing experimental soundscapes with polished and structured song writing. This is the work of a man whose talent knows no bounds.
For fans of: Aphex Twin.
Khruangbin – Cómo Te Quiero
Khruangbin’s debut album almost felt like it appeared out of thin air and stunned the world with its tranquil fusion of Thai funk, surf rock and soul. Sure, this cut from their new album Con Todo El Mundo doesn’t stray far from their old sound, but this is hardly an issue when it sounds as wonderful as this. “Cómo Te Quiero” is perfectly paced, melodic and beautifully tender.
For fans of: Bonobo.
Django Django – Surface to Air (feat. Self Esteem)
This collaboration with Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor is a catchy and delightfully unexpected change in direction, found on their new album Marble Skies. If the dancehall inspired rhythm is Django Django’s attempt to hop on the popular trend that has dominated the charts over the last few years, we are not complaining. The band’s production, as always, leaves you questioning the track’s genre and displays the intricately constructed soundscape that the art rock four piece deliver so well.
For fans of: Everything Everything.
Justin Timberlake – Say Something (feat. Chris Stapleton)
From simply its name alone, Man of The Woods was shaping up to be the album that redefined JT as a nature loving, flannel wearing, tree cutting country musician. “Say Something” confirms our belief that Justin Timberlake’s search for authenticity is forgettable and unforgivably dull. Songs like this just make you miss the excellence of “Mirrors”, right? What a song. Maybe we should just listen to that instead.
